You have seen me share these before and I will continue to share! 🤩✨

For me these maths boards are a GAME CHANGER when it comes to teaching multiplication and division. Tried and tested for years in third/fourth class, and the difference in using these is so obvious when it comes to the child's understanding of the operations.

I use these for both multiplication and division. We use these a lot at the beginning of both concepts and then maybe 1 day a week for a quick revision throughout the rest of the year. Students will eventually find and gravitate towards the strategy that they prefer. I use them in dry-wipe pockets which you can get in most school supplies shops and on Amazon.

☝️This is a great example of a class teacher choosing specific foclóir from my Gaeilge resources as a focus for her Gaeilge lessons on Bia.

You can see she chose a total of 18 words and 1 question/answer. This is what was appropriate for her students in her particular context - Gaelscoil, Rang 1. Hence why there is an absence of more basic foclóir - úll, oráiste, bainne, uisce, etc.

📣 My resource packs include WAY too many foclóir agus frásaí FOR A REASON - to provide you with teacher agency over what you teach through the téama. It allows you to ensure you are not re-teaching but building on prior learning, to provide a sufficient level of challenge, to choose words that you may feel are of more relevance or benefit, to look at a téama through a particular lens if you wish (for example Bia - you might choose to focus on Bricfeasta only) and ultimately to steer your lessons in the way your students will benefit most.

This is a helpful and well known mnemonic to help students remember which letter combinations to use when applying an urú!

🤔 I never recommend using English as part of your Gaeilge lessons, but having spent a number of lessons explicitly teaching the rules, I have used this mnemonic myself in the past with a class that was really struggling to retain the letter combinations. It definitely helped.

💌 If anyone would like a free copy of these posters, I can send them to you. You could potentially display one, or print multiple per A4 page and have students stick them in the back of their Gaeilge copy to reference. Just pop a comment below and I will send them over! 🥰

- Explore their favourite scannán, clár teilifíse, or aisteoir through comhrá and scríbhneoireacht activities.
- Film a variety of short TV shows in groups - write the script, practice, record, combine, write the amchlár and have a viewing party.
- Create a short movie as Gaeilge using stop motion Write the script, create the stop motion, share.
- Agallamh beirte - one student as an interviewer and the other as a celebrity. Script, practice, show/record.

👩‍💻 Teicneolaíocht - Smaointí Eile 🤔
- Explore their favourite aipeanna, cluichí ríomhaireachta, cainéal YouTube through comhrá and scríbhneoireacht activities.
- Write a 'Blag Ranga - plan a variety of sections and pupils working in small groups, publish for parents/other classes.

It is so important that we don't fall into the habit of reteaching the same vocabulary to students year on year in Gaeilge lessons. This becomes a risk as themes and topics tend to be repeated year on year, and there can be a variety of class programmes and schemes in use across the same school.

Revision is obviously really important but we also want to ensure that students are always building on their vocabulary, phrases and language skills.

How can I do this?
✅ Assess prior knowledge before beginning a new topic
✅ Plan explicitly for new vocabulary, phrases and skills
✅ Include opportunities for revision and use of previously acquired language and phrases in lessons
✅ Place a core focus on the use of NEW vocabulary and skills within lessons
✅ Display NEW vocabulary and skills in the classroom environment for reference and scaffolding
✅ In senior classes, use the themes to increase understanding and use of grammatical rules and concepts where relevant (for example TG and sport - ag imirt peile)
✅ A whole-school plan for thematic language development can also be helpful to ensure a cumalative approach
✅ Varying the lens within the theme slightly in each class to allow for a variety of vocabulary (for example 'Bia' - bricfeasta, lón, dinnéar, sa bhialann, an phicnic, ag an mbeárbaiciú, etc)

A visit to the EU Council & Council of the EU was not on my bingo card this year 😅✈️🇧🇪🇪🇺 #gifted

I honestly couldn't believe I had been invited, only then to learn it was the first ever time the EU Council had invited edu-creators 🥹 What an honor and a privilege to not only be acknowledged but also valued by such a huge entity (*still pinching myself).

The two days were jam packed with activities and workshops to help us understand what actually happens there, and to explore the materials available to educators from early years right through to third level education. It was fascinating to say the least, and I have a whole new appreciation and understanding of the EU Council & Council of the EU.

That said, what made the trip really special was the group of people I got to share it with. There was such a warmth and energy in the group from the very first afternoon, that you almost forgot we were strangers to one and other. It highlighted to me that the love of teaching and being an educator is universal ✨ It travels across nationalities, religions, languages and countries ❤️ How amazing it was to sense such familiarity in a room full of differences. I feel so inspired and in awe of the other teachers on the trip, and I feel very very lucky and grateful to have shared some time & many great conversations with them.

Go raibh maith agat @eucouncil for a trip I will never forget 🥰

I honestly couldn't believe I had been invited, only then to learn it was the first ever time the EU Council had invited edu-creators 🥹 What an honor and a privilege to not only be acknowledged but also valued by such a huge entity (*still pinching myself).

The two days were jam packed with activities and workshops to help us understand what actually happens there, and to explore the materials available to educators from early years right through to third level education. It was fascinating to say the least, and I have a whole new appreciation and understanding of the EU Council & Council of the EU.

That said, what made the trip really special was the group of people I got to share it with. There was such a warmth and energy in the group from the very first afternoon, that you almost forgot we were strangers to one and other. It highlighted to me that the love of teaching and being an educator is universal ✨ It travels across nationalities, religions, languages and countries ❤️ How amazing it was to sense such familiarity in a room full of differences. I feel so inspired and in awe of the other teachers on the trip, and I feel very very lucky and grateful to have shared some time & many great conversations with them.

This is a great Maths lesson where students are measuring length/height and perfect for this term too ☀️

How I order teaching the briathra Gaeilge and why 🤔👇

This is my favourite approach, that I have tried and tested over many years in senior classes. We explicitly explore the verbs and tenses as part of 'gramadach' lessons, rather than learning a verb or two a week. As always, you need to find an approach that works for you 🥰

1️⃣ An t-Ainm Briathartha (ag rith, ag ól...)
They need verbs to communicate efficiently, teaching them a variety of verbs is a good place to start and ensuring they understand the verb meaning is key. This also allows them to communicate in three tenses temporarily with the simple structure of Bhí mé X, Tá mé X, Beidh mé X

2️⃣ Briathra neamhrialta in root form (abair, beir, bí...)
Having the concept of the 11 verbs that don't follow the normal grammatical tense structures will be very helpful as you move on to teaching the tenses. Teach these so that they are familiar with them understand their meaning.

3️⃣ Aimsir Chaite - neamhrialta (dúirt, rug, bhí...)
We tend to communicate a lot in past tense such as telling news, recounting experiences, etc. Similarly many reading comprehensions and texts are written in the past tense so I always choose to start with AC. I start with the irregular verbs as this tends to ease confusion around rules when you get to briathra neamhrialta. Just teaching them as verbs that need to be remembered and learned as they don't follow the rules.

4️⃣ Aimsir Chaite - rialta (chuir, scríobh...)
Then moving onto the regular verbs and teaching them by applying the rules that apply to the A.C . This emphasises that you don't have to learn these 'off by heart' once you know the rules. Depending on class level I may teach some of all conjugations (mé/tú/sé/sí...)

Again I start with the irregular verbs as this tends to ease confusion around applying rules when you get to the AF briathra neamhrialta.

⛪ Sistine Chapel & Michelangelo inspired art 🎨

This was a fun one! The class was full of giggles but also really enjoyed the challenge.

🎨 Explore images of the Sistine chapel ceiling artwork in terms of what they observe and notice (VTS)

🎨 Think-pair-share discussion how the artwork might have been created. Discuss the myth that Michelangelo painted the ceiling while lying down - do we think that was possible? 🤔💭.

🎨 Explore Michelangelo as an artist, look at some other samples of his work

🎨 Try out painting while lying down by taping pages to the underneath of desks 😅 Organising paint was a little trickier, I tried to do one between every 2/3. Students could draw first or just jump straight into painting.

🎨 Gallery walk to observe the artwork of others & discussion on the process.

When we gave this method a try, we decided that it wasn't so easy... but lots of fun! 🤩
