Maximising the Potential of your Class Novel - Comprehension Strategies
There are endless opportunities when it comes to the class novel which can sometimes leave us confused as to where we should begin. One possibility is to use the class novel to explore the comprehension strategies and provide children with opportunities to practice and engage in these strategies.
This guide places an emphasis on exploring one comprehension strategy with your class per novel chapter. It focuses on a 12 chapter novel, but could easily be adapted to suit longer/shorter novels. Comprehension strategies explored are:
- making connections
- clarifying and decluking
- determining importance
The guide also include one 'responding to text' activity for each chapter with 8 accompanying worksheets, and some ideas on how to create a novel study display in your classroom.
It is important to remember that comprehension strategies require direct teaching and plenty of practice. The class novel is a great way to explore these in the classroom, but other lessons will most certainly be needed!
